In the News
News organizations have asked candidates to answer questions. While there’s some overlap in questions, each has a different format and question wording. Cathy’s responses to those questions are included here. Look for them in local newspapers before Election Day!
In particular, note the question asked by the Box Elder News Journal and Cathy’s response.
What do you see as the main differences between you and your opponent(s), if you have them?
I disagree with incumbent’s support of
- Utah Fits All Scholarships. I believe taxpayer dollars earmarked for public education should stay in public schools, including charter schools. Vouchers divert taxpayer money that should support public schools.
- Efforts to eliminate Utah’s rule that promises equitable educational opportunities for all students. (see news articles Utah public schools’ ‘educational equity’ rule survives repeal attempt after state school board vote and Utah school board won’t sign anti-DEI resolution, letter pushing to end U.S. Education Department)
- Ending federal management of federal education funds (8-10% of Utah’s education budget), including Title I and special education funding, which could reduce Utah’s overall education funding unless taxes are raised and weaken civil rights protections, impacting students with special needs or who are underserved.
